Status: Deceased, assassinated by Nod.Dr Wong Hu Chan was a GDI scientist who played a key role in the development of the Ion Cannon, one of the organisation’s most powerful weapons. As the chief scientist on the project codenamed ‘Akira’, he oversaw the development of this new super-weapon during the First Tiberium War.
The Akira Project
Wong Hu Chan leads research into the Ion Cannon from a scientific facility in Angola. The project aims to provide the GDI with an orbital weapon capable of striking targets on the Earth’s surface with great precision.
The strategic importance of the programme naturally makes Chan a priority target for the Brotherhood of Nod.
Kane realises that preventing or even simply delaying the completion of the Ion Cannon could give Nod a considerable advantage in the war against the GDI.
The Assassination of Chan
To disrupt the Akira project, Kane personally orders the elimination of Wong Hu Chan.
Nod then launches an operation against the facility in Angola. Snipers from the Brotherhood of Nod manage to locate the scientist and assassinate him.
Chan’s death constitutes a tactical victory for Nod: the weapon’s development is indeed delayed.
However, this is not enough to halt the programme.
The Ion Cannon
Despite the death of its chief scientist, the GDI continued the work begun by Chan and eventually succeeded in commissioning the Ion Cannon.
The weapon becomes one of the GDI’s signature technologies and retains major significance during subsequent conflicts. It evolves considerably over the decades, but remains based on the principle of an extremely powerful energy strike delivered from orbit.
The assassination of Wong Hu Chan therefore achieved only part of Kane’s objective: Nod succeeded in delaying the deployment of the super-weapon, but not in preventing its existence.
