Status: Deceased.Carlos Mendoza is a Colombian mercenary in the service of the Black Hand during the First Tiberium War. A particularly brutal and unpredictable fighter, he became one of General Gideon Raveshaw’s most effective agents, whilst also serving as his personal bodyguard. His speciality is close-quarters combat with heavy weapons, particularly the Flamethrower.
A particularly violent mercenary
Before joining Nod, Mendoza worked for the Sword of Chagall, a Colombian separatist movement. However, his violence reached such a level that even this organisation considered his methods excessive and got rid of him.
His profile caught the attention of the Black Hand, who recruited him as a mercenary. Mendoza quickly gained a reputation there as an extremely effective fighter, but his sadism and bloodthirsty behaviour earned him the antipathy of many of his own comrades.
Raveshaw nevertheless recognises his effectiveness and makes him his personal bodyguard as well as one of his key agents.
Flamethrower Specialist
Mendoza favours heavy weapons, particularly the flamethrower. In a telling sign of his temperament, he uses this extremely dangerous weapon without wearing the protective gear normally required.
He also possesses considerable hand-to-hand combat skills and combines his physical strength with an almost uncontrollable aggression.
This brutality makes him a formidable, yet unpredictable, opponent, even for other members of Nod.
The Hunt for Havoc
When the GDI discovers the existence of the ReGenesis project, Nick “Havoc” Parker becomes a direct threat to Raveshaw’s secret research. Mendoza is then ordered to eliminate him.
His first attempt fails.
The confrontation quickly turns the mission into a personal vendetta. Mendoza develops a genuine obsession with Havoc and sets out to hunt him down. During this pursuit, he goes so far as to cause a conflagration in an entire village, but once again fails to kill the GDI Commando.
He then returns to the castle serving as the Black Hand’s base.
Final showdown
Havoc eventually infiltrates the fortress in order to find the scientists kidnapped by Nod. When the complex is compromised, Mendoza triggers the laboratory’s self-destruct sequence.
After the explosion, Havoc and Sydney Mobius reach a helipad in an attempt to rejoin the other scientists. However, Mendoza is waiting for them there, determined to settle the score with Parker once and for all.
He engages Havoc in hand-to-hand combat and attempts to use his martial arts skills to his advantage, but the Commando manages to fend him off. The tanks supplying his Flamethrower then catch fire, causing Mendoza’s death.
Personality
Mendoza is described as psychotic, sadistic and extremely violent. Even amongst the members of the Black Hand, who are not exactly renowned for their compassion, his behaviour earns him a reputation as a savage.
His main weakness lies in his obsession. After his initial failure against Havoc, eliminating the Commando gradually ceases to be a mere mission and becomes a personal vendetta.
This personality contrasts with his undeniable military effectiveness: Mendoza is dangerous enough to have become both one of the Black Hand’s finest agents and Raveshaw’s personal bodyguard.
