My ‘1000 Suns’ Shen is a Chinese general in the Asia-Pacific Alliance who specialises in nuclear weapons and nuclear warfare.
His family history begins several generations before his birth, when his great-grandfather witnessed the American atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
Deeply traumatised by the destructive power of nuclear weapons, he returned to China and retreated to an isolated Pillbox in the heart of the wilderness, where his family now lives cut off from the rest of the world.
Over the generations, the simple shelter became a vast underground complex, in which Ma Shen was born, grew up and received his education.
He thus inherited the almost obsessive fear of nuclear war that has haunted his family ever since Nagasaki.
As an adult, however, Shen realises that he cannot continue to live under the grip of this fear.
He therefore chooses a radical method to overcome it: to confront head-on what he fears most by applying to join the APA’s First Atomic Warfare Division.
Despite his obvious psychological issues relating to nuclear weapons, the army accepts his application.
Over the following fifteen years, Shen learnt to master his fear whilst also mastering the weapons that had caused it, eventually rising to become head of the atomic forces himself.
Having risen to the rank of Lieutenant General, ‘1000 Suns’ developed a doctrine based entirely on the destructive power of nuclear weapons.
His flagship unit was to be the Sunstorm, an Artillery piece capable of firing nuclear projectiles and leaving a devastated area in its wake.
His forces could also deploy rocket-launching tanks and Shadow Tanks, accompanied by defences capable of engaging both enemy ground vehicles and aircraft.
Its signature weapon was to be the neutron bomb, contaminating a vast area with radiation dangerous to any units lingering there.
Shen’s journey is thus rooted in a profound paradox: the man raised amidst the absolute terror of the atom ultimately becomes the one who masters the APA’s atomic weapons.
My ‘1000 Suns’ Shen was intended to embody the nuclear might of the Asia-Pacific Alliance: a man who chose to conquer his greatest fear, transforming his family’s trauma into the most destructive weapon in his arsenal.
