Canonical fate: Killed in Hammerfest in 2030.Jake McNeil is a GDI Officer and the brother of the famous Commander Cdr. Michael McNeil. A secondary but important character in the events at Hammerfest, he meets two different fates depending on the campaign in question: in the GDI campaign, he is killed during the attack on the base; in the Nod campaign, he is captured and then manipulated into betraying the GDI.
In his brother’s shadow
Jake is described as a solitary and idealistic man who finds it difficult to trust authority figures. His relationship with Michael is complicated by the latter’s reputation: having become one of the GDI’s most prestigious Commanders, Michael is a role model against whom Jake is constantly measured.
Jake nevertheless joins the GDI and becomes a competent Officer. During the Second Tiberium War, he takes part in an inspection tour of GDI facilities in the Arctic regions.
Hammerfest
Jake is in Hammerfest, one of the GDI’s main European bases, when Nod launches its offensive.
In the GDI campaign, the base falls into the hands of the Brotherhood of Nod. Cdr. McNeil subsequently leads a counter-attack and recaptures Hammerfest, but is unable to save his brother. Kane personally reveals to him that Jake was killed during the attack, making his death one of the most personal losses Michael suffered during the war.
Capture by Nod
The Nod campaign presents an alternative version of events.
C.A.B.A.L. identifies Jake as a weakness that can be exploited to infiltrate Hammerfest. Anton Slavik’s forces therefore set a trap for his inspection team and use toxic Soldiers to neutralise him before evacuating him to Nod’s lines.
Once captured, Jake is confronted by Anton Slavik and Oxanna Kristos. They exploit his feelings of inferiority towards Michael and his desire to see the war come to an end. Oxanna also uses her charms to facilitate his conversion. Jake eventually agrees to collaborate with the Brotherhood.
The Betrayal of Hammerfest
Jake’s knowledge of the GDI’s defences then becomes extremely valuable.
He agrees to deactivate the Firestorm perimeter protecting Hammerfest, allowing Nod’s forces to penetrate a facility that had previously been virtually impregnable. The fall of the base paves the way for the final phase of Kane’s plan.
In this timeline, Nod then uses Hammerfest to deploy the missiles needed to destroy the GDSS Philadelphia. The Brotherhood’s victory ultimately enables Kane to launch his global alteration missile. Jake’s personal fate following his defection is not specified. A family history developed outside the game
Development documents provide Jake and Michael with a much more detailed backstory, but this information should not be regarded as being on the same level as the events directly depicted in the game.
According to this version, Jake and his parents were captured by Nod during the First Tiberium War. Michael is said to have been born whilst they were in captivity, and the two brothers were subsequently taken in by the GDI after the camp was liberated. This backstory explains, in particular, Jake’s distrust of authority and the complex relationship he has with his brother.
Personality
Jake is, above all, a vulnerable, idealistic character who is deeply affected by comparisons with Michael. He possesses neither his brother’s reputation nor his military successes, and seems fully aware that he lives in his shade.
In the Nod campaign, Slavik and Oxanna exploit this vulnerability to the full. They do not merely persuade him through coercion: they use his resentment, his need for recognition and, above all, his desire for peace to lead him to believe that Kane’s vision could bring an end to the conflict.
