EA Phenomic

EA Phenomic is a former German studio specialising in video game development, best known for its real-time strategy titles. Its headquarters were located in Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany. The studio was founded in 1997 under the name Phenomic Game Development by Volker Wertich, a developer best known for his involvement in the creation of The Settlers series.

Over the course of its existence, Phenomic gradually established itself in the field of PC strategy games. The studio gained particular recognition thanks to the SpellForce series, which stood out by combining real-time strategy mechanics with role-playing elements. It also worked on the BattleForge series, which combined strategy with a collectible card game system.

On 23 August 2006, the studio was acquired by the American publisher Electronic Arts and was subsequently renamed EA Phenomic. This acquisition enabled the team to work on several projects from the Electronic Arts catalogue.

EA Phenomic is notably behind Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances, a free-to-play massively multiplayer strategy game that runs directly in a web browser. Originally developed using web technologies and launched in 2012 under the EA Play label, the game brings the world of the famous Command & Conquer franchise to a persistent online environment. Players can build and expand their bases, assemble armies, face off against opponents and form alliances.

After around sixteen years in operation, including nearly seven under the management of Electronic Arts, EA Phenomic closed its doors in July 2013. This decision led to the loss of several dozen jobs and marked the end of the studio, although some of its games and licences continued to exist after its closure.
