Status: Unknown, likely detained by the Allies.Rupert Thornley is the President of the European Union following the Third World War and one of the main antagonists in Red Alert 3: Uprising. A skilful diplomat and influential businessman, he had worked behind the scenes during the war to secure the funding and support necessary for the Allied Forces’ victory. After the conflict, he capitalised on this success to gain political clout and became one of the most ardent advocates of FutureTech.

An ally of FutureTech

FutureTech had supplied the Allies with various technologies that gave them a considerable advantage during the war. Thornley gave the company his wholehearted support after the victory and maintained much closer ties with it than he is willing to admit publicly.

In public, he cultivates the image of an elegant, reassuring and diplomatic leader. He plays down concerns about FutureTech and presents its activities as necessary for the world’s reconstruction and security.

In reality, Thornley is secretly involved in the development of a far more dangerous project.

The Sigma Project

Following the Soviet Union’s surrender, pockets of resistance continue to fight against the Allied occupation. At the same time, FutureTech is establishing several facilities across the former Soviet territory.

The resistance fighters eventually discover the existence of the Sigma Project.

At the heart of the programme lies the Sigma Harmoniser, a technology derived from temporal research capable of freezing elements in time. Thornley intends to use this power to resolve the ‘Soviet problem’ once and for all.

His ambitions therefore go far beyond simply maintaining order in the occupied territories: he intends to use extremely powerful temporal technology to reshape the world according to his own vision.

The Soviet Resistance

The Soviet survivors gradually realise that FutureTech poses a far greater threat than a mere military enterprise.

Dasha Fedorovich, Oleg Vodnik and Nikolai Moskvin then organise a resistance movement. The Soviet Commander discovers a secret FutureTech base in Russia, where Thornley reveals the existence of the Sigma project to him and openly displays his contempt for Soviet efforts.

The Soviets subsequently discover a FutureTech facility in the Yucatán, where they obtain further information about the Sigma Harmoniser.

They then realise that the super-weapon must be destroyed before it is activated.

Sigma Island

The final showdown takes place on Sigma Island, where FutureTech is guarding the Harmoniser whilst it is being commissioned.

Thornley is convinced that activating the machine will enable him to carry out his plans. Soviet forces, however, manage to penetrate the complex and destroy the Harmoniser before it can reach full power.

The destruction of the machine also leads to Thornley’s political downfall.

His links to the project and his true ambitions are revealed to the general public. The President of the European Union, who had presented himself as one of the architects of the Allied peace, now appears as the man who secretly supported a dangerous temporal experiment.

After the scandal

Following the destruction of the Harmoniser, Kelly Weaver immediately seeks to protect FutureTech. She publicly states that the company was unaware of Thornley’s personal involvement and attempts to portray the project as the isolated initiative of a single politician.

Thornley’s exact fate is never revealed.

With his ambitions having been exposed to the whole world, he presumably loses his power and is likely to find himself in the custody of the Allied authorities. However, the available information does not allow us to confirm whether he is imprisoned, tried or executed.

Personality

Thornley is, above all, a charismatic and manipulative politician.

He knows exactly how to use the media and his public image to his advantage. Whereas a military figure such as Douglas Hill imposes his authority directly, Thornley prefers reassuring speeches, negotiations and political manoeuvring.

This façade, however, masks a considerable ambition. His support for FutureTech gives him access to technologies capable of upending the global balance of power, and he eventually comes to regard the Sigma Harmoniser as the means to impose his own vision of order.

He is played by Malcolm McDowell.
