Status: Varies depending on the campaign.Kenji Tenzai is one of the principal commanders of the Empire of the Rising Sun during the Third World War. Young, energetic and extremely self-assured, he comes from a wealthy family with links to the imperial military industry. An expert in Rising Sun technology, he is notably charged by Prince Tatsu with testing the latest weapons developed for the Empire on the battlefield.
The heir to Tenzai Robotics
Kenji’s family runs Tenzai Robotics, a company specialising in the development of mechanical systems and High Technology weapons used by the Imperial Army.
This background explains his preference for mechanised forces. Kenji is keen to deploy Tsunami Tanks, Mecha Tengu, Striker-VX units and, above all, the imposing King Oni. Unlike Naomi Shirada, who is more closely associated with naval power, Kenji thus represents the technological and robotic branch of the Imperial Army.
He also enjoys a special relationship with Tatsu, who entrusts him with testing new Imperial combat technologies.
The Third World War
During the war, Kenji takes part in several major operations for the Land of the Rising Sun.
In the Imperial campaign, he fights alongside the Shogunate Commander and contributes to the expansion of the Empire. Like the other imperial commanders, he regards the Emperor’s will as sacred and remains deeply loyal to the Rising Sun.
In enemy campaigns, Kenji naturally becomes a recurring foe.
In particular, he takes part in the defence of Japan when the Soviets attack Mount Fuji. In this timeline, the Soviet offensive ultimately crushes the Imperial command, and Kenji is killed along with the Emperor’s other defenders.
His fate, however, varies depending on the campaign followed.
Uprising
The continuity of Uprising is based on the victory of the Allied Forces. The Empire has surrendered and Japan finds itself under occupation, whilst Tatsu officially agrees to collaborate with the victors.
Kenji refuses to accept this situation.
The Empire’s defeat acts as a real wake-up call for him. Far from giving up the fight, he mobilises new forces to defend what remains of the Empire and quickly regains his usual confidence.
Alongside Shinzo Nagama and Takara Sato, he thus becomes one of the principal commanders of the imperial insurrection against the Allied occupation.
The Allies are charged with eliminating these various pockets of resistance. Kenji is eventually defeated, contributing to the gradual restoration of Tatsu’s authority. However, following the fall of Takara, the last major rebel Commander, Tatsu reveals his own intentions and turns the Imperial forces against the Allies.
The Commander’s Challenge
Kenji also appears as an opponent in the Commander’s Challenge in Uprising.
This mode particularly highlights his penchant for technology and mechanised units. One of his specialities is, unsurprisingly, linked to the King Oni, powerful combat robots representing the pinnacle of Imperial terrestrial technology.
He features notably in Blood Feud, where his rivalry with Shinzo Nagama is so intense that their two armies begin fighting each other even before the Commander intervenes.
This rivalry illustrates the divisions that emerged within the former command structure following the fall of the Empire.
Ten-Shi Zaibatsu
After the war, the Tenzai family’s industrial interests also underwent a significant transformation.
Tenzai Robotics merged with the Shirada family’s naval operations to form the Ten-Shi Zaibatsu, thereby bringing together two of the former Empire’s leading technological traditions: the Tenzai’s robotics and the Shirada’s shipbuilding.
Kenji therefore remained closely associated with the imperial military industry even after the political collapse of Yoshiro’s regime.
Personality
Kenji is patriotic, enthusiastic, competitive and particularly arrogant. His self-assurance stems as much from his social status as from his mastery of imperial technologies.
This sets him apart from Shinzo Nagama, who is far more calculating and traditional. Whilst Shinzo embodies strategy and the old imperial military tradition, Kenji represents youth, technological innovation and the power of machines.
Despite his arrogance, his loyalty to the Empire is genuine. Defeat does not cause him to give up: on the contrary, it drives him to mobilise new forces and continue the fight against the occupation.
