Pham ‘Inferno’ Quan is a Vietnamese general in the Asia-Pacific Alliance who specialises in incendiary weapons and firefighting.
The youngest child of a prosperous family of merchants, Quan grew up in a privileged environment where nothing ever seemed to satisfy his desires for long.
From childhood, he developed a genuine fascination with fire and spent much of his time seeking ever more inventive ways to reduce his numerous toys to ashes.
As a teenager, this fascination took on a far more dangerous dimension, and his toys were soon no longer enough to satisfy his urges.
Quan then embarked on a veritable campaign of arson across Hanoi, fuelled largely by his alcohol consumption.
His conflagrations culminated in the public destruction of a centuries-old Taoist temple, an event that presumably forced him to abandon his former identity.
Under a false name and a new identity, he subsequently managed to enrol in a military academy.
Paradoxically, the army provided him with the ideal setting to transform his destructive tendencies into a genuine professional skill.
Quan indeed revealed a remarkable aptitude for the military use of fire and also demonstrated genuine leadership qualities on the battlefield.
Having risen to the rank of three-star general in the APA, ‘Inferno’ naturally built his entire doctrine around pyrotechnic weapons, napalm and incendiary attacks.
His forces were to include, in particular, Inferno squads, napalm mortars, Dragon Tanks, Lynx tanks, medium rocket-launching tanks, Mantis and Firefly, accompanied by Red Guards and Tank Hunters.
He could also deploy the heroic unit Yu Hyun Jung, whilst his bases were protected by flamethrower turrets and rocket defences, amongst other defences.
His signature support ability,Inferno Artillery, allowed him to extend this strategy by unleashing incendiary bombardments on enemy positions.
Finally, Quan displays a particularly unsettling personality: for him, setting Soldiers, vehicles or buildings alight seems to give him as much pleasure as winning the battle. His lines portray him as a man convinced that everything will end in ashes sooner or later.
Pham ‘Inferno’ Quan was thus intended to embody the most incendiary facet of the APA: a pyromaniac turned military leader, who had transformed his obsession with fire into a doctrine capable of setting entire battlefields ablaze.
