Status: Alive at the time of his last known appearance.Erich ‘Patch’ Wulfe is a former member of the German GSG 9 who became a GDI special forces Commando and explosives expert within the Dead-6. Born in Berlin and accustomed to the dangers of the streets from a very young age, he caught the GDI’s attention thanks to his experience in the German counter-terrorism unit. In Renegade, he is notably the only member of the Dead-6 to reach the rendezvous point on his own following their confrontation with Nod in the mountain village.

From Berlin to GSG 9

Wulfe is originally from Berlin. The E.V.A. data from Renegade describes him as having gained substantial experience of life on the streets at a very young age. He subsequently joined GSG 9, the German unit specialising in counter-terrorism operations.

It was during this period that his skills caught the attention of the GDI. The international organisation eventually recruited Wulfe into its own special forces.

The Dead-6

Wulfe became a member of the Dead-6, the GDI’s elite commando team, which also includes Nick "Havoc" Parker, Shai ‘Hotwire’ ’ Aviv, Nigel ‘Gunner’ Grant and Dariel ‘Deadeye’ MacInnis.

Within this unit, Patch serves as a Grenadier. His speciality is therefore the use of explosive weapons against infantry, entrenched positions and enemy installations.

His favourite weapon is the Kestrel Grenade Launcher.

This specialisation allows the members of the Dead-6 to have complementary roles: Havoc is the all-round fighter, Deadeye the sniper, Hotwire the technical specialist, Gunner the heavy weapons expert and Patch the grenade and explosives specialist.

The Break-up of the Dead-6

At the time of the events in Renegade, the Dead-6 team no longer operates as a permanent unit. Its members nevertheless find themselves involved in operations relating to the abductions of scientists by the Black Hand of Nod.

Wulfe thus reappears as a supporting character in the missions ‘Deadly Reunion’ and ‘Obelisk of Oppression’.

It is during these events that he particularly demonstrates his survival skills.

The Battle of the Mountain Village

The former Dead-6 members face off against Nod forces in a mountain village. After the fighting, they must make their way to a rendezvous point set up in the local cathedral.

Of the commandos involved, Patch is the only one to succeed in defeating the Nod forces he faces and to reach the cathedral on his own.

This feat is the main individual achievement explicitly attributed to Wulfe in the available sources and highlights that he is far from being merely the team’s explosives expert: he is also capable of surviving and operating alone behind enemy lines.

Reunion with Havoc

Patch finally reunites with Havoc during the campaign. His appearance forms part of the gradual reunion of the former Dead-6 members whilst Parker pursues Nod and seeks to rescue the kidnapped scientists.

Unlike several secondary characters in Renegade, Wulfe is not killed during these events. However, the sources consulted do not describe his career after the First Tiberium War. His fate must therefore be considered unknown, rather than assuming he died or retired without this being documented.

Patch in multiplayer

There is a notable difference between the narrative character and his playable counterpart in multiplayer.

In the story, his signature weapon is the Kestrel, in keeping with his role as a Grenadier. In multiplayer, however, Patch uses the Tiberium Flechette Gun, accompanied by a Silenced Pistol and a timed C4 Charge.

This gameplay configuration should therefore not be confused with his preferred equipment as described in his biography.

Personality and skills

Sources provide relatively little information about Wulfe’s personality. His background, however, suggests that he is a hardened, independent Soldier who is particularly skilled in the use of explosives.

His early experiences in Berlin, his time with GSG 9 and his subsequent recruitment into the Dead-6 suggest an operator who already possessed significant experience of urban environments and counter-terrorism operations even before joining the GDI’s special forces.

His survival during the battle in the mountain village is also the best demonstration of his effectiveness: whilst the Dead-6 were scattered, Patch was the only one to fulfil his objective single-handedly and reach the designated rendezvous point.
