Egon ‘Cutting Edge’ Schuller is a Swiss scientist and European Union General specialising in the development and deployment of experimental military technologies.
Born into a middle-class family in the suburbs of Zurich, Egon displayed exceptional intellectual abilities from a very young age.
Recognised as a genius at the age of just three, he progressed at a spectacular pace in his studies and, at the age of sixteen, obtained a PhD in quantum electronics.
Everything seemed to point to a sheltered existence in academia, far from the battlefields.
This trajectory came to an abrupt end when the first GLA uprising engulfed Europe and destroyed the university where Schuller had chosen to continue his work.
Furious at the destruction wrought by the GLA, the young scientist abandoned academia and joined the resistance.
After the war, rather than resuming his civilian research, he decided to remain in the armed forces as a specialist in experimental weapons.
His abilities quickly attracted the attention of the European high command, but his temperament posed a problem: brilliant and extremely self-assured, Schuller found it difficult to work with others.
The European Union nevertheless decided to harness his genius by entrusting him with a specially selected unit, charged with testing and deploying European experimental weapons around the world.
Despite his difficult personality, his soldiers show him exceptional loyalty and willingly agree to serve under the command of the man they regard as the EU’s true ‘mad scientist’.
His doctrine is naturally based on technological superiority, notably featuring Shock Troopers, Railgun squads, Aegis tanks, Heavy Assault Lasers, Orcas and Valkyries.
His bases are equipped with Railgun turrets and rocket launchers, whilst his signature ability, Skylance, rounds off his experimental arsenal.
Schuller was thus set to carry on the legacy of generals such as ‘Pinpoint ’ Townes and Alexis Alexander, by taking the use of High Technology weaponry even further. The atomic symbol on his insignia could, in fact, be a reference to this legacy, although this interpretation remains speculative.
Egon ‘Cutting Edge’ Schuller was thus intended to embody the European Union’s technological lead: a child prodigy turned general, convinced that future wars will not be won by today’s weapons, but by those that no one else has yet mastered.
His nickname is, in fact, a play on the English expression ‘cutting-edge technology’, referring to technology at the forefront of progress.
