Status: Fate unknown.Cdr. ‘Mack’ McNeil is one of the GDI’s most famous commanders and the chief architect of its military operations during the Second Tiberium War. Extremely competitive and wholly devoted to his organisation, he commands his forces from the Kodiak, a mobile Command Hub capable of operating as far as low Earth orbit.

When Kane reappeared in 2030 and launched a new global offensive by Nod, General James Solomon immediately recalled Cdr. McNeil. McNeil joined the Kodiak alongside Chandra and was given his first mission: to retake Phoenix Base, which had fallen to Nod’s attacks.

Cdr. McNeil quickly becomes the GDI’s chief field commander. From the Kodiak, he directs operations across several continents and, in particular, fights the forces of General Vega.

The discovery of a mysterious device utilising alien technology also leads Cdr. McNeil to make contact with the Forgotten, mutants affected by Tiberium. Despite initial tensions, he forges an alliance with them, particularly with Umagaan and their spiritual leader Tratos.

The Death of Cdr. McNeil

The war becomes personal when Nod attacks the GDI base at Hammerfest, in Norway.

Cdr. McNeil recaptures the facility, but learns that his brother Jake McNeil was killed during the attack. Nod also manages to steal the crystals used in the GDI’s sonic technologies. Deeply affected by this loss, Cdr. McNeil nevertheless continues the campaign and recovers the crystals during subsequent operations.

The Nod campaign features an alternative storyline in which Jake survives, is captured and then manipulated into betraying the GDI; however, this branch does not align with the GDI’s victorious outcome, which is the basis for the rest of the story.

The War Against Kane

Cdr. McNeil then methodically continues to dismantle Nod’s strategic projects. In particular, he takes out a facility producing Tiberium Core Missiles, then destroys a secret factory manufacturing Banshee fighters, aircraft developed using alien technology.

Kane also attempts to take advantage of an ion storm immobilising the Kodiak to eliminate his opponent directly. Cdr. McNeil, however, organises the ship’s defence and repels Nod’s assault.

Meanwhile, Kane prepares his most dangerous project: a global alteration missile designed to radically accelerate the Earth’s transformation by Tiberium.

The Battle of Cairo

Thanks to intelligence obtained by The Forgotten, Cdr. McNeil discovers that Kane is preparing his ultimate weapon in Cairo.

The GDI then launches a massive offensive against the Egyptian capital. Cdr. McNeil must destroy the intercontinental missile launchers and the Temple of Nod before Kane can set his plan in motion.

Following the GDI’s victory, Cdr. McNeil personally enters the Temple and confronts Kane. The battle ends when Cdr. McNeil impales Kane, who appears to die once again.

The global alteration missile is neutralised and the Tacitus falls into the hands of the GDI. Cdr. McNeil thus wins the Second Tiberium War.

After the war

Cdr. McNeil realises, however, that the victory over Nod does not solve the main problem. Tiberium continues to contaminate the planet at an alarming rate, and the Tacitus now represents one of the GDI’s main hopes for understanding and controlling the alien crystal.

He also continues his work on harmonic resonance technologies, derived from the research that led to the creation of the GDI’s sonic weapons.

His subsequent fate remains deliberately unclear. He was originally intended to die alongside part of the Kodiak’s crew at the start of the conflict against C.A.B.A.L., but later elements of the canon indicate or suggest that he survived. Kane makes a specific reference to Cdr. McNeil in Kane’s Fury, without specifying what became of him.

Personality

Cdr. McNeil is described as intensely loyal, competitive and determined to win. He has a fairly straightforward view of his objectives: once a mission is set, he mobilises all necessary resources to see it through. Chandra sums up this personality by explaining that he knows what he wants and will do anything to get it.

This determination is particularly evident following Jake’s death. Despite his anger towards Kane, Cdr. McNeil retains enough discipline to pursue the GDI’s strategic objectives.

His effectiveness ultimately enables him to become a legendary figure within the organisation, to the extent that a warship subsequently developed by the GDI is named after him.
