Death: 2047, suicide.Alexa Kovacs is an abbess of the Brotherhood of Nod and one of the key figures behind the development of LEGION, the artificial intelligence created by Kane based on the research that led to the creation of C.A.B.A.L. Although extremely intelligent and deeply devoted to Kane, she gradually becomes paranoid. Her fear that LEGION might repeat the atrocities of C.A.B.A.L. ultimately leads to her downfall.

A childhood marked by C.A.B.A.L.

Alexa grew up in a region of Central Africa that would later become a Red Zone. Whilst still a child, she lost her parents, Caleb and Ileana Kovacs, when their estate was attacked and its occupants massacred. Those responsible were Cyborgs controlled by C.A.B.A.L. Alexa survived alone for over a year in the ruins of the family estate. Mute and nearly starved to death, she was eventually discovered by scavengers from Nod and joined their group.

Her intelligence, her faith and, above all, her exceptional skills in the fields of cybernetics and artificial intelligence quickly attract the attention of the Brotherhood of Nod. She enrols at the Nod Academy and rapidly rises through the ranks.

The Abbess of LEGION

Alexa gains a reputation as a cold, reserved and deeply dogmatic woman. Her religious fanaticism isolates her from her peers, but catches Kane’s attention.

Despite her youth, she is promoted to the rank of Abbess and assigned to one of Nod’s most secret projects: the development of LEGION, a combat artificial intelligence derived from research into C.A.B.A.L.

In 2046, Alexa activates LEGION. Kane then entrusts her with the mission of guiding the artificial intelligence during preparations for the impending war against the GDI. LEGION plays a key role in infiltrating the GDI’s orbital defence network in Johannesburg, a crucial step in the plan targeting the GDSS Philadelphia.

Kilian Qatar

At the same time, Alexa develops a deep hostility towards General Kilian Qatar.

After intercepting communications in which Qatar expresses his doubts about certain decisions made by Kane, Alexa becomes convinced that she poses a threat to the Prophet. Her fanaticism gradually transforms these suspicions into certainty.

She then organises an operation designed to make her appear to be a traitor. Alexa uses LEGION and Nod forces disguised as Qatar’s troops to attack Temple Prime in Sarajevo. During the operation, information regarding the Temple’s defences is deliberately passed on to the GDI.

The ploy works. Following the destruction of Temple Prime and Kane’s return, Qatar is eventually arrested and then executed on the Prophet’s orders.

But Kane is still unaware that Alexa is the one truly responsible for this so-called betrayal.

Fear of LEGION

Alexa then begins to fear the artificial intelligence she herself helped to develop more and more.

This fear stems from her childhood: C.A.B.A.L. is responsible for the death of her parents, and LEGION uses technologies derived from this former artificial intelligence. Alexa therefore fears that it too will eventually turn against Kane and humanity.

When Kane orders LEGION to retrieve the Tacitus, her fear reaches its peak. She imagines that the combination of artificial intelligence and the knowledge contained within the artefact could give rise to an uncontrollable entity.

She therefore decides to disobey Kane outright.

Betrayal and suicide

During the operation to recover the Tacitus in China, Alexa secretly infects LEGION with a computer virus designed to neutralise it.

Kane, however, catches her in the act.

Cornered, Alexa also confesses to being responsible for the operation carried out against Temple Prime under the alias Kilian Qatar. Kane then realises that he had had one of his best generals executed for a betrayal she had never committed. Furious, he orders his guards to take Alexa away for questioning.

Alexa then draws her weapon. After proclaiming Nod’s motto, she turns the gun on herself and shoots herself in the head.

She dies in 2047 whilst LEGION, severely damaged by her Virus, is deactivated. The GDI thus temporarily retains control of the Tacitus.

Personality

Alexa Kovacs is characterised by remarkable intelligence combined with extreme religious fanaticism. Her loyalty to Kane is absolute, to the point where she regards any questioning of the Prophet as a form of betrayal.

However, her trauma linked to C.A.B.A.L. constitutes her main weakness. Her mistrust of LEGION gradually turns into an obsession, to the point where she becomes convinced that she must disobey Kane in order to protect Kane himself.

This contradiction ultimately leads to her downfall: convinced she is acting to defend the Prophet, Alexa actually sabotages his plans, unwittingly causes Kilian Qatar’s death and temporarily prevents Nod from retrieving the Tacitus.
