Julian ‘Bulldog’ Battersby is a British general in the European Union who was due to appear in Command & Conquer: Generals 2.
The sole heir to an aristocratic dynasty, Battersby cultivates a public image as a colourful character, as charismatic as he is eccentric.
A legendary storyteller and a true bon vivant, he has a particular fondness for fine Scotch, quality cigars and anecdotes that are sometimes utterly implausible.
However, this jovial persona conceals a very different man when he is in command.
In private, Bulldog is described as an extremely demanding leader and a remarkable strategist, who shows little tolerance for failure on the part of his subordinates.
He also possesses a thorough understanding of geopolitics and harbours considerable ambition for the future of the European continent.
His aim is to restore to Europe the prestige and global influence it possessed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This philosophy is reflected in his approach to combat: for Battersby, honour and grand principles take second place to effectiveness and victory, as summed up by his motto: ‘Honour is overrated. I want to win!’ Unlike other specialised European generals, Bulldog was intended to be the classic EU general, with a balanced arsenal and the ability to adapt to different situations.
His forces included, in particular, reconnaissance and anti-tank squads, Aegis tanks, armoured personnel carriers, Longbows, Phantoms and Valkyries, as well as units equipped with railguns.
He could also deploy the Gerhardt Krause commando unit, whilst his bases were protected by Minigun and rocket turrets.
His signature support ability,Cyber Command, further enhanced the technological versatility of his forces.
Battersby held a particularly important position, as he was envisaged as the leading figure of the European Union within the universe of the cancelled game.
Julian ‘Bulldog’ Battersby was thus intended to embody traditional European leadership:an aristocrat who appeared jovial on the surface, but was in fact a ruthlessly pragmatic strategist, determined to restore Europe to its rightful place at the centre of the global stage.
