Status: Alive following the assassination attempt on Carville; subsequent fate unknown.Monnage is an American general in the Allied Forces who serves during two major periods of the Red Alert timeline. A Pentagon-based Officer, he works primarily as General Carville’s deputy and helps oversee Allied commanders.
Although he never personally leads a campaign in the games, his presence alongside Carville makes him one of the few supporting characters to span the period between the first Red Alert and Red Alert 2.
Alongside Carville
Monnage’s character is almost entirely linked to that of Carville.
He is portrayed as his aide, assisting him in his duties and taking part in military briefings alongside him.
He should therefore not be regarded as holding a position of supreme command comparable to that of Gunter von Esling or the Allied Commander. Monnage is instead a member of the US General Staff, where he assists Carville in the preparation and monitoring of operations.
This role also explains why he is regularly seen at Allied Command headquarters rather than directly on the battlefield.
The Second World War
Monnage’s first appearance takes place during the war between the Allied Forces and Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union.
He appears in Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Tesla Missions, a PlayStation adaptation combining the Taiga Missions and M.A.D. Missions expansions under the title Retaliation.
Monnage is already serving as Carville’s deputy. Together, they advise the Allied Commander during operations against Soviet forces in Europe.
At this stage, Carville does not yet necessarily occupy exactly the same position as he will decades later in Red Alert 2, but Monnage is already at his side.
This is an interesting detail in terms of continuity: their military collaboration therefore dates back to the war against Stalin.
A veteran of the Allied Forces
This appearance also makes Monnage a particularly long-serving veteran of the Alliance.
He took part in the Soviet-Allied war during the Stalin era, and was still on active duty when the Soviet Union attacked the United States several decades later.
As with Carville, however, one must remain cautious when attempting to link all his appearances.
Retaliation adds video sequences specific to the PlayStation version of the first Red Alert, whilst Red Alert 2 subsequently develops its own continuity. However, the game deliberately reuses the same character and the same actor, which allows Monnage to be portrayed as a veteran who served in both conflicts.
The Third World War
Monnage reappears in Red Alert 2.
He is now an American general working at the Pentagon and continues to assist Carville.
When Alexander Romanov’s Soviet Union invades the United States, the Pentagon naturally becomes one of the main Command Hubs for the Allied Forces.
Monnage remains part of Carville’s inner circle and thus plays an indirect role in the conduct of the war.
His most recognisable appearance comes prior to Operation: Deep Sea.
Operation: Deep Sea
After the recapture of Washington, Carville finally returns to his office at the Pentagon.
Monnage is present at the subsequent briefing.
The military situation now demands urgent action in the Pacific.
Soviet naval forces commanded by Vladimir are threatening Pearl Harbor, and Carville orders the Allied Commander to proceed there immediately to repel the offensive.
Monnage does not personally command this operation.
Rather, his presence serves to demonstrate that he is indeed a member of Carville’s inner circle and takes part in the briefings organised at the Pentagon.
The Assassination of Carville
The most significant event concerning Monnage personally occurs shortly afterwards.
The Soviets organised an operation aimed at eliminating Ben Carville.
A suicide attack struck the General’s headquarters.
Carville was killed.
Monnage was also in the area affected by the explosion. He was injured in the attack, but unlike Carville, he survived.
Carville’s funeral
Following the attack, a military funeral was held for Carville.Monnage attended. His presence is to be expected given their long-standing collaboration.
The two men had previously served together during the war against Stalin and continued to work together several decades later at the Pentagon.
Carville’s death thus brings a sudden end to a partnership that had spanned two wars against the Soviet Union.
After the funeral, however, Monnage no longer plays a significant role in the Red Alert 2 campaign.
His fate following the Allies’ victory over Romanov is not specified.
