The Commander of Rio is a former Officer of the Brotherhood of Nod who takes control of the garrison in Rio de Janeiro following the Second Tiberium War. Taking advantage of Kane’s apparent disappearance and the collapse of Nod’s central authority, he transforms his forces into an independent faction and openly rejects the Prophet’s authority.
The Fragmentation of Nod
Following Nod’s defeat in the Second Tiberium War, the Brotherhood descends into chaos. Without Kane to maintain its unity, various factions begin to pursue their own agendas.
In Rio de Janeiro, the local garrison breaks away. Its commander now considers himself the legitimate leader of this new faction and claims that his men are the true heirs of Nod. He goes so far as to brand Kane a heretic and regards the former Brotherhood of Nod as having died with him.
However, this independence does not last long.
The Return of LEGION
In 2034, Kane secretly prepares his return and reactivates LEGION, the artificial intelligence destined to become one of his main tools.
Rio serves as LEGIONS’ first operational test. The AI is tasked with instigating an uprising in the city and regaining control of the territory held by the separatists.
The Commander of Rio reacts arrogantly. Convinced of the superiority of his forces, he openly provokes Legions and initially refuses to submit.
However, the troops controlled by the artificial intelligence prove to be vastly superior.
The Rio Uprising
LEGION exploits the unrest in the city and launches its forces against the dissident faction’s installations. The Commander attempts to repel the offensive, but his base is gradually overwhelmed.
His confidence quickly vanishes when he realises he cannot defeat his opponent.
The separatist leader then abandons his statements against Kane and attempts to flee aboard his Mobile Construction Vehicle. Cornered, he finally seeks to surrender and offers to pledge allegiance to Kane once more.
Legions grants him no second chance.
An exemplary execution
The Commander’s attempt to surrender comes too late.
Legions is ordered to eliminate the dissident leaders and executes the warlord, making his death an example to the other factions that have abandoned Kane.
LEGION’s victory in Rio thus has significance far beyond the fate of this single Garrisonable Structure. It constitutes the first stage of Kane’s plan to gradually rebuild the Brotherhood of Nod.
After Rio, LEGION is sent against other factions and rebel leaders in order to re-establish the Prophet’s authority over Nod.
