Status: Deceased, executed by Oxanna Kristos.Matcheck is a television presenter and propagandist for the Brotherhood of Nod, working for the regime of Hassan. Based at a television station in Benghazi, he presents, amongst other programmes, Today’s Execution, a programme that turns the public executions of the regime’s enemies into propaganda spectacles.

Today’s Execution

Matcheck works alongside Oxanna Kristos, who is officially presented as a journalist for the channel. Together, they comment on the executions ordered by Hassan in a deliberately enthusiastic and macabre tone.

One of the victims is believed to be Anton Slavik, Commander of the Black Hand, accused by Hassan of spying for the GDI. Matcheck reports on his execution by lethal injection, unaware that Oxanna is in fact one of Slavik’s loyalists who has infiltrated Hassan’s propaganda apparatus.

Oxanna’s fake death

Oxanna organises Slavik’s escape before the execution can be carried out.

The regime must then cover up this failure. Matcheck publicly announces that Slavik is dead and that his body has been cremated. He also claims that Oxanna perished in the collapse of a tunnel near her home. In reality, both are still alive and are plotting a revolt against Hassan.

The capture of the station

When Slavik goes on the offensive, he realises that control of the propaganda machine is essential to overthrowing Hassan. His forces therefore attack the television station in Benghazi in order to use its facilities against the regime.

Matcheck continues to broadcast the official propaganda, accusing the GDI in particular of conducting biological research on the civilian population and portraying General Solomon as mentally unstable.

But Oxanna, whom he believed to be dead, suddenly appears on set.

Visibly unsettled, Matcheck attempts to carry on with his programme.Oxanna shoots him dead on air, then takes his place in front of the cameras to announce the fall of Hassan’s regime and present Anton Slavik as the Brotherhood’s new leader.

Role

Matcheck represents, above all, the propaganda machine of Hassan’s regime. His programme turns executions into entertainment designed to bolster the leader’s authority and intimidate his opponents.

His death therefore carries strong symbolic significance: Oxanna does not merely eliminate him; she seizes his airtime and turns his own propaganda tool against Hassan. The regime’s presenter is thus replaced in a matter of seconds by Slavik’s voice of rebellion.
