Undoubtedly one of the most impressive feats of Japanese engineering to date, the Sea-Wing is a stealth submersible whose airtight hull and engines are specially designed to enable it to transition from a Submarine to an air-to-ground aircraft. This perhaps makes it the most manoeuvrable vessel in the Imperial Army, which, given the extreme mobility of many of Japan’s armed forces, speaks volumes. What is more, neither the Soviet Army nor the Allied forces possess an equivalent to this type of dual-role unit, the likes of which have never been seen before. With the discovery of the Sea-Wing, it would seem that not even the seas are safe any more from the Sleeper Ambush forces of the Empire of the Rising Sun.

A gyroscopic cockpit prevents Sea-Wing pilots from turning upside down when switching to Sky-Wing mode. It is said that pilots generally prefer the skies to the seas.

When hidden underwater, the Sea-Wing is almost undetectable by radar and could almost be mistaken for a giant mechanical ray. Once it has detected the enemy aircraft, it rises to the surface to unleash a Barrage of homing Seeker rockets at its opponent. The missiles are alarmingly accurate even from out of range, and the Sea-Wings do not seem to suffer from a shortage of rockets either. An entire squadron of the Soviet Union’s finest MiG fighter aircraft was decimated by a patrol of Sea-Wings in just a few minutes.

Whilst the MiG incident left the Soviet air command in a state of panic, it later emerged that the Sea-Wing was linked to the Sky-Wing attack craft, which had previously been thought to be a completely different unit. In Sky-Wing mode, the craft appears to use the thrusters from its missiles to help it maintain altitude, whilst employing a simple energy weapon to attack ground targets. The weapon causes severe burns and has proven particularly lethal against unarmoured targets – especially those ill-equipped to return fire against a fast aircraft such as the Sky-Wing.

Thanks to its ability to fly, the Sea-Wing is probably the most versatile asset in the Imperial Navy. This illustration shows the predecessor to the current model, which, according to some reports, still lacked flight capability and required two pilots.

The way in which Sea-Wings transition into Sky-Wings, and back again, is almost bizarre, as the vehicle simply flips onto its side like a coin. How Sea-Wing pilots manage to withstand this, on top of the gravitational forces of subsonic climbs and submersion, is a mystery, although it is believed that the vehicle’s cockpit is suspended in a sort of gyroscopic mount. In any case, piloting such a vehicle must require incredible dexterity, especially as the Sea-Wing’s slender shape means it is relatively fragile and relies on its manoeuvrability for protection. The Empire of the Rising Sun, with a population considerably smaller than that of its major rivals, must learn only the very best of the best in order to commission these unusual vessels.

Reconnaissance on the battlefield has at least revealed the following facts about the Sea-Wings/Sky-Wings:

  • Aerial emergence– In its basic form, the Sea-Wing is a relatively fast submarine that travels armed with an anti-aircraft missile system specifically designed to track and destroy flying targets. Whilst it cannot attack land-based units, it can cut through the waves and deploy into its Sky-Wing form seemingly at any time.

-Naval submersion– Whilst in Sky-Wing form, this vehicle’s kinetic pulse weapon can rapidly submerge unarmoured targets, with results likely to be superior to those of the Mini-Guns on Soviet Twinblade combat helicopters. Unlike a helicopter, however, the Sky-Wing must remain constantly in motion in the air, and unlike any known vehicle, it can simply dive backwards into the water to evade enemy fire.

-Virtually undetectable Submarine- Whilst submerged, the Sea-Wing is undetectable to most radar systems and cannot be directly engaged by conventional weapons. It becomes truly vulnerable when it surfaces to fire, although the advantage of the first strike has proved essential to Imperial battle tactics.

-Target detection - Although the Sea-Wing is extremely capable on its own, it appears designed to perform even better when combined with other Imperial forces, including naval units such as Shogun-class Battleships. In Sky-Wing configuration, this Shogun Battleship can assist the Shogun’s main batteries in tracking targets inland.
