GeneralsOnline

GeneralsOnline is a free community platform that allows you to play Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour online via a modern multiplayer infrastructure. It aims to replace the game’s old online services whilst improving stability, performance and the ease with which players can connect.

What is GeneralsOnline?

GeneralsOnline is a community project dedicated to the multiplayer mode of Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour.

Rather than simply replicating the old GameSpy servers, the project offers a modern reimplementation of the game’s multiplayer services, built using the SuperHackers fork of the source code released by Electronic Arts.

The aim is to preserve the experience and gameplay of Zero Hour whilst modernising all the technical aspects required for online play.

GeneralsOnline thus improves connectivity between players, match stability and matchmaking, whilst integrating its features directly into the game’s multiplayer interface.

Which game is compatible?

GeneralsOnline is primarily designed for:

  • Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour

Unlike CnCNet, which supports several classic instalments in the series, GeneralsOnline therefore focuses on the Zero Hour multiplayer experience.

You still need to have the game installed to use the service.

Key points

The modernised Zero Hour multiplayer

GeneralsOnline retains the main features of the original Zero Hour multiplayer, whilst replacing its old network infrastructure.

In particular, the service allows players to find multiplayer lobbies and matches directly from within the game, without having to use virtual network software or manually configure complex router settings.

Installation and updates are also managed by the GeneralsOnline client.

Quickmatch and rankings

One of the key features of GeneralsOnline is the return of Quickmatch.

This system automatically finds an opponent and starts a competitive match without the need to manually join a lobby.

GeneralsOnline also offers a ranking system that allows players to track their performance.

Smoother gameplay

GeneralsOnline introduces several technical improvements to the multiplayer engine of Zero Hour.

In particular, the project features multiplayer running at 60 Hz, designed to make gameplay and controls more responsive.

The developers are also working on reducing latency, synchronisation errors, crashes and connection issues that could affect the original game.

A modern network infrastructure

GeneralsOnline uses a relay infrastructure designed to facilitate connections between players.

The aim is, in particular, to avoid port, NAT or network configuration issues that previously complicated certain online matches.

This infrastructure relies on a global network of servers to provide the most direct and stable connection possible between players.

An anti-cheat system

GeneralsOnline also incorporates mechanisms designed to protect multiplayer games.

Since 2026, the project has supported Easy Anti-Cheat to strengthen the fight against cheating in compatible games.

This protection complements other improvements made to the client and the matchmaking system.

An experience faithful to the original game

Unlike OpenRA, GeneralsOnline does not aim to completely reinterpret the gameplay of Generals.

The project seeks to preserve the original Zero Hour experience, whilst modernising its technical operations and multiplayer infrastructure.

However, certain improvements may alter technical aspects of the game, such as its simulation rate, its interface or certain behaviours that have been corrected by the developers.

Based on the Generals source code

GeneralsOnline has benefited from a particularly significant development for the Command & Conquer community: Electronic Arts’ release of the source code for several games in the series.

More specifically, the project is based on the work carried out by SuperHackers, a community initiative that continues to develop and refine the Generals and Zero Hour engine using this source code.

This foundation allows GeneralsOnline to make much more in-depth changes to the game’s mechanics than previous community-led multiplayer solutions.

Free

GeneralsOnline is free.

However, you must own and install Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour to be able to use it.

The game is available, amongst other places, in Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection on Steam and via the EA app.

The GeneralsOnline infrastructure is funded primarily by donations from the community.

An independent community

GeneralsOnline is an independent community project.

It is neither developed, published nor officially supported by Electronic Arts.

The project does, however, collaborate with several long-standing members of the Generals community, including SuperHackers, GameReplays, The Command Centre, Community Outpost and C&C: Generals.

How to play?

Installation is relatively straightforward.

Firstly, you must have Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour installed on your computer.

You then simply need to download and install the GeneralsOnline client. During installation, the programme will ask you to specify the installation location of Zero Hour.

Once installation is complete, GeneralsOnline can launch the game with the necessary components.

Players can then access the multiplayer features directly from Zero Hour and join custom games, Quickmatch and other connected players.
