Beyond the Battle

Command & Conquer: Beyond the Battle was a series of developer diary videos (making-of) released in 2013 to showcase the Command & Conquer real-time strategy game project (originally Generals 2).
Beyond the Battle Part 1:
Released on: 9 May 2013
This first episode focuses primarily on the identity of Command & Conquer and the core elements that Victory Games wanted to recapture. The developers explain their desire to return to the series’ roots following Command & Conquer 4: base building and defence, resource gathering with minimal constraints, army building, fast-paced combat and strategic diversity.
The video also highlights the influences guiding the design of the new game, with particular emphasis on the spirit of C&C: Generals. It features previously unseen gameplay footage and several interviews with developers from Victory Games. Louis Castle, co-founder of Westwood Studios and one of the original creators of C&C, speaks in particular about what he believes was at the heart of the original formula.
Beyond the Battle Part 2:
Broadcast on: 6–7 August 2013
This episode focuses on the practical process of creating a unit. Victory Games demonstrates the various stages involved in turning an idea into a playable unit: concept → visual design → art production → in-game implementation.
The chosen unit belongs to the GLA (Global Liberation Army) and reimagines the famous Bomb Truck from Command & Conquer: Generals in a new form: the Nuke Truck. The video therefore allows viewers to follow how the team modernised an iconic unit from Generals whilst retaining its flamboyant and instantly recognisable character.
