Tips

I – Transporting 25 men:

To transport more than 5 men on a sea transport, build 5 VBTs, load 5 men onto each VBT and load the VBTs onto the transport (note that the AI has no qualms about putting more than 5 units onto a transport)...

II – Cost-effective mineral harvester:

Build a Tiberium Refinery and sell it. This way, the harvester will cost you around $700 instead of $1,100.

III – Unit speed:

Create squads by selecting multiple units and pressing ‘Ctrl’ and ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ or ‘4’. Then, put them into formation by pressing ‘F’.

The slowest units will match the pace of the fastest one. This works the other way round if you have The Aftermath or Counterstrike.

IV – Free targeting:

To fire at the ground or its units, hold down ‘Ctrl’ whilst firing. You can also demolish bridges and burn down trees that are in your way.

V – Selling vehicles:

Build a Service Depot, drive a vehicle onto it, click on the ‘Sell’ icon and then on the unit.

VI – Counterstrike (hidden missions):

On the overview screen, press “Shift” whilst clicking on the loudspeaker icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Doing this will unlock four new missions where you’ll fight giant ants.

VII – Ideas from Fans:

A – To get off to a good start…- Explore the map to locate your opponents.

  • Place a unit in the ore fields so you’re immediately alerted if the enemy arrives.
  • If you’re on the Allied side, it’s essential to use anti-tank land mines to protect the access points to your base.
  • There’s no point in hoarding money without spending it. You need to play with a just-in-time resource strategy. After all, having a credit balance of $10,000 without any units is pointless.
  • During an assault, do not let your units fire on their own. Concentrate the fire of all your units on a single enemy unit until it is destroyed, then move on to the next one.
  • To combat Mammoth Tanks, there’s only one solution: an army of medium tanks and anti-tank Land Mines.B – Special Strategy with the Allies: Here is a strategy for the Allies that allows you to transport a Tanya into the enemy base quickly. Be warned, this requires a great deal of concentration:

1 - Your Chronosphere must be ready for use;
2 - Build a Mobile Construction Vehicle;
3 – Build a Barracks;
4 – Start building a Tanya and put the process on ‘pause’ just before it’s finished;
5 – Chronosphere your mobile construction vehicle into the enemy camp onto a slightly open patch of ground. Deploy it;
6 - Place your barracks and double-click on it to make it your main barracks;
7 - Finish creating Tanya. She is now ready to sabotage the enemy’s buildings.

There’s no point in preparing such an operation if the enemy camp is full of Tesla Coils. Destroy them with a helicopter raid or render them inoperable with a nuclear attack on the Power Plants.C – Another Strategy for Winning:

  1. Get off to a good start to survive for more than 5 minutes:

To begin with, you need to click faster than your shadow (well, faster than your opponents, at any rate!). So build a Boot Camp as soon as possible and deploy about ten Soldiers and rocket launchers, just in case some joker has sent a reconnaissance unit your way...

Meanwhile, build a nice Tiberium Refinery. Next, build a Weapons Factory, then another Tiberium Refinery. As soon as the factory is finished, produce two Harvesters, then tanks.

Build a third Tiberium Refinery, then two more Weapons Factories, and carry on producing armoured vehicles, carefully positioning them at the natural entry points to your base and escorting your harvesters.

Only then should you equip yourself with the bare minimum of the various types of defences available, whilst also ensuring that sensitive buildings at the heart of your base are protected. In this regard, position your defences in such a way as to minimise the number of access points to your base as much as possible, as you must, at all costs, keep construction costs to a minimum. But don’t hesitate to place a solid line of Tesla Coils (or Anti-Aircraft Guns, depending on your faction) at vulnerable points. Blend ground defences harmoniously with anti-air defences.

You are now equipped with a solid base, and you have what it takes to fend off a Blitz attack (in the event that some strategy-impaired fool has spent their time building tanks and has the suicidal urge to pay you a visit), since you have roughly as many tanks as your opponents, plus defence structures (which have the advantage of being repairable in real time).

But now the trickiest phase begins, and – the ultimate pain – you’re going to have to think…

  1. Fortify your base and deploy your forces

Produce around twenty Soldiers and send them to the four corners of the map, just to keep tabs on enemy troop movements. Also build a runway and send the Spy Plane to uncover the heart of your opponents’ bases. Because from now on, it’s essential to know at all times what your opponents are up to.

Indeed, there’s no point in wasting your credits on all sorts of defences to prepare for every eventuality. It’s better to know in advance how your opponents will proceed and arm yourself accordingly…

Here’s how you should organise yourself:

Build:

  • at least one more construction centre;
  • another one or two Tiberium Refineries, or even more if there is an abundance of ore, as close as possible to the ore deposits;
  • a naval base if possible and if you really think it’s worth it;
  • additional runways (or Helipads) if you can afford them;
  • one of each available structure, if you haven’t already done so.

Produce:

  • a good number of rocket-launching soldiers (more effective than anti-aircraft defences);
  • heavy Artillery units (to be positioned slightly behind the front lines);
  • a division of heavy armour;
  • collectors until you have a ratio of two collectors to one Tiberium Refinery;
  • a full fleet if necessary;
  • a squadron of MiGs or helicopters.
  1. Prosper

After that, it’s up to you… If you’re near a body of water and you’re playing as the Allies, it’s a good idea to deploy a few Cruisers accompanied by Destroyers. If you’re near water and have the Russians, move elsewhere or produce as many Submarines as possible if one of your opponents has the Allies (if there’s nothing but water on the map, it’s best to quit the game and make a mental note of the name of that bloody map for next time). The most important thing now is to field a complete fleet tailored to your opponents’ weaknesses and to keep a close eye on your oil intake. The simplest approach is to station a few units at the sites you’re after (which is better than systematically escorting your harvesters, as this risks causing traffic jams near your Tiberium Refineries – something that bloody computer is all too good at). The ultimate strategy is to place construction centres on the ore sites and set up a few Tesla Coils or gun turrets/Pillboxes to keep nosy neighbours at bay.

  1. Clearing the map

Here’s how to raid an enemy base at minimal cost:

  • Skilfully identify your opponent’s weaknesses: no anti-air defences, no fleet despite a lovely sea view, a base that’s too spread out with multiple entrances, poorly protected ore…
  • Tailor your strike force to exploit these weaknesses;
  • Storm the enemy’s ore deposits by combining ground and air attacks and systematically destroying any harvester that’s a bit too greedy, all with the aim of ruining your opponent;
  • Eliminate the enemy fleet if it is likely to hinder your attack;
  • Lure the bulk of the enemy troops towards your defensive structures to protect your units as effectively as possible;
  • Advance en masse towards the enemy base, choosing the most vulnerable entrance;
  • Make liberal use of your Artillery (and Cruisers where applicable) and your squadrons to cut off your prey’s power supply (who, if they have Tesla Coils, will certainly curse you);
  • Finish with a massive, precision attack (attack at no more than two different points) whilst levelling everything in your path.
