The Black Rider

The “Black Horseman” military base (in Russian: Черный всадник) was the main research site for the USSR’s nuclear weapons programme. The base was situated in the southern regions of Russia and was heavily guarded by tanks, SAM Sites, Tesla Coils and a large Airbase.

The main base was situated on a high plateau, surrounded by concrete walls and checkpoints, and heavily guarded by Soviet Soldiers and tanks. The nuclear weapons research centre was in the north-eastern part of the base, whilst the control centre and the four Missile Silos were in the north-western part.

To the north-east of the base was an Airbase, responsible for the site’s defence. In addition to the Mi-24 Hinds and MiG-23s, the base also had an oil pumping station and very large stocks of fuel.

Four two-kilotonne warheads were manufactured at the facility and placed in Missile Silos. They were due to be launched at major European cities just as the base fell.

The Allies breached the outer wall protecting the control centre and made their way into the complex’s underground levels, where they had to deactivate each missile from the four control terminals. As well as housing the warheads, the underground facilities also housed a Soviet Weapons Factory and a Repair Facility.


Allied Forces Mission 10:

Kosygin has indicated that this was Stalin’s main atomic weapons factory. Approach the Soviet base with extreme caution. We do not know whether the atomic bombs have already been armed. Short-circuit the facility, then destroy all the atomic weapons there.

Allied Forces Mission 10 continued:

Now that the complex is in our possession, disable the launch control centres. Send your engineers to disable the control centres before the missiles reach their targets. Enemy technicians can help you locate the control centres, if they survive.
