Generals of Generals

Originally, Command and Conquer: Generals was to feature generals, as EA Los Angeles would later do with Zero Hour.

However, following balance issues, this option was scrapped by the EA Pacific team, and both the single-player campaign and the multiplayer mode were completely overhauled just before the start of the Public Beta.

Right at the start of the game, when selecting your Command Center, you would have had to choose between the three generals – American, Chinese or GLA – depending on the faction you’d selected.

Each General, as was the case in Zero Hour, would have radically altered their faction’s basic arsenal and, consequently, your strategy. This concept was revived in Command & Conquer 4 with the Crawlers.

US Generals

The United States, for example, had: General Bradley (a NATO tank general who becomes the Chinese general Ta Hun Kwai in Zero Hour), General Criffon (a US Air Force general who becomes Malcolm Granger in Zero Hour*) and General Thorn (a NATO Special Forces general).

Chinese Generals

China had: General Chen (a Red Army general who becomes Shin Fai in Zero Hour), General Mau (a general of the Second Artillery Corps who becomes Tsing Shi Tao in Zero Hour), and General Jin (a general of the Special Police).

GLA Generals

The GLA had: the Warmaster General, the Chemical and Biological Weapons General, or the Terrorist Cell General.

African Generals

Colonel Kurtz was one of the “generals” of the African Empire faction, which was ultimately not included in the game Generals.

The countries in this faction were South Africa, Libya and Egypt...

‘Deleted’ Generals from Zero Hour

In Zero Hour, the generals do appear, but there are still a few omissions:

  • General Galherios was a Portuguese General at the head of NATO. He was only intended to appear in the single-player campaign;

  • General Mohmar (featured in the single-player campaign – see his profile) was intended to be the GLA’s Super Boss General in Challenge Mode;

  • General Ironside was intended to be the US Super Boss General in Challenge Mode.
