The Secrets of C&C1

He killed Kenny!

In the alpha versions of the game, the graphics were much more violent. They’re still in the game’s databases, but no longer appear in the missions. Presumably to avoid censorship.

Boxing match!

Westwood had created hand-to-hand combat animations for all the game’s infantry units. Again, these are in the game’s databases but do not appear in the missions. They did the same thing in Red Alert.

I feel like I know them!

The civilians in Command and Conquer all have first names in the game. There’s Joe, Bill, Shelly, Maria, Eydie, Dave, Phil, Erik, Dwight… These are actually the first names of all the members of the game’s development team: Joe Bostic, Joe Kucan, Bill Randolf, Shelly Johnson, Eydie Laramore, David Dettmer, Phillip W. Gorrow, Erik Yeo, Dwight Okahara…

The Secrets of Tiberium!

In the game’s alpha version, Nod had Chem-Warriors who could hurl liquid Tiberium at their enemies. And a Biological Research Laboratory was required to train them (which later became a fake building). These units are present in the game, but the player cannot build them (except in multiplayer). The Chem-Warriors return in Survival Operations and Renegade.

The Tiberium Tree!

Here are the different stages in the transformation of a tree into a Tiberium tree.

The Mobile Orca Transport

(Mobile Orca Pad or Orca Lift Truck) never made it into the game. It was presumably intended to be a unit and feature in a cutscene. This unit was due to return in Renegade, but once again, it was cut.

Old Images

Two GDI Humvees have discovered a small Nod base. Note that Nod has both the Medium Tank and the Scorpion Rocket. Also note the small Nod symbols on the Construction Yard and the Hand of Nod. It would have been nice to see this in the game, but Westwood removed them to avoid having two VCMs.

Here, the GDI is landing its troops on a beach. You can see a few Soldiers running through the water, suggesting that Nod must have had Guard Towers there too, and that the overcraft are positioned at an angle that’s impossible to see in the game.
