The International Defence Group (GDI)

The International Defence Group, or GDI, is a global peacekeeping force. It was founded by the UN in accordance with the law on the United Nations Global Defence Act (UNGDA), on 12 October 1995. The GDI’s original objective was to preserve world order by combating global terrorism, exemplified by the Brotherhood of Nod

Fighting on behalf of the United Nations, it acts as the UN’s armed force against threats to the common good. However, its mission also involves controlling and eliminating Tiberium, which is ravaging the planet and has forever altered its appearance (turning it from a blue planet to a green one in the process). However, this view of Tiberium as a Virus did not sit well with Nod, which is one of the reasons for their conflict. The GDI therefore fights and strives to maintain a semblance of civilisation in the last remaining pockets of cities within the Blue Zones, safe from any threat.

The GDI’s equipment is mainly supplied by the United States, whether it be the highly renowned Humvee, Abrams main battle tanks or the dreaded A-10 Warthog; although some of the equipment used comes from other countries, such as the formidable Soviet-designed Mammoth – a design recovered after the fall of the USSR, following the conflict between the Allies and the USSR in the 1940s. However, the GDI benefits from an R&D programme that is unique in the world, enabling it to develop unique and revolutionary equipment: such as the well-known Orca combat helicopter or the first directed-energy weapon operated from a combat station in Earth orbit: the Ion Cannon.
