Game Overview
Continuum was Westwood’s most ambitious project: an MMORPG set in the Tiberium universe, where players would have explored a ravaged Earth divided between GDI-controlled zones and Nod territories. A working prototype existed when the closure of Westwood Studios in 2003 brought development to an end.
Continuum was an MMORPG for people who don’t like MMORPGs.
- “C&C meets Zelda meets Counter-Strike” sums up the game well: the C&C universe, Zelda-style controls, and Counter-Strike combat tactics.
- There were ‘crisis zones’, for example: scheduled flight routes, pre-arranged battles between faction leaders, and many other ideas that have since appeared in MMORPGs.
- The game was set to take place in the Tiberium future, featuring the GDI, Nod, the Mutants and C.A.B.A.L. The Scrin (aliens) were to have been added later. We had Los Angeles half submerged, Area 51, Dino Island, the Airport of a mutant city, and so on…
- Combat would have been more fluid than in most MMORPGs. Range would have been a key factor in weapon usage, and there would have been ‘layers of counters’ for different weapon types.
- The creatures would have had much of the behaviour typical of console video game bosses, in the sense that you could have exposed their weaknesses and then struck them to cause more damage.
